I've been in doctrinally sound churches that turned doctrinally south into Dominion or Emergent Theology, or some other demonic candy-coated rat poison. I've been in soul-winning churches that became overly legalistic. I've been in large boring church with Sunday-only Christians. And yes, I have even been in good, biblically-grounded, Jesus-sharing churches (unfortunately, out of my state).

BUT

This is not a place to bash on churches. Many true, bible-believing Christians attend them. Truth be told, I would LOVE to find a local tight-knit, family-friendly, Sunday-potluck church that stays true to God's word. But they don't seem to exist anymore.

So is it possible to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and still not go to a formalized church? YOU BET! On this blog I'll share what works for me and I hope you'll share what works for you. Music, books, movies, revelations (yours or John's), etc.

Who knows. Perhaps this will be a great place to fellowship online until we can find great places to fellowship offline. So I welcome you to DISCHURCHED.

So let's start with music. There's a school of thought out there that says: "If it's rock or heavy metal, it's of the devil." I beg to differ as an old 80s Christian metal song by Stryper comes to mind. Do they really think the devil would want to write a song titled "To Hell with the Devil" and those words used repeatedly throughout the song. Do they really think he would want to remind himself where he's going to spend eternity? I think not.

True, Stryper's song is an 80s song and surely the devil would use newer, updated styles to enhance his influence... but then, why wouldn't God? A good example of updated Christian rock/metal is here:
Disciple

Do we really think the devil would want to glorify God using this supposedly devilish music? I think he's smarter than that. Our job as Christians is to monitor the lyrics to make sure bad stuff isn't entering our brains.

Below is a list of some music I've purchase in the past that helped me draw closer to God, even if it is of the heavy metal/rock genre. Click on any image for more information.

A personal favorite; Theocracy. These are their CDs:

"Mirror of Souls"

"As the World Bleeds"

They also did a self titled CD (my favorite) that's sold out on Amazon.com.

Another favorite, one that took me out of the 80s; Disciple.
You can find there music here:

"By God"

"Back Again"

"This Might Sting a Little"

(And many MANY more)

I could go on but this is a good start for now. Please share with me non-traditional music you've found to bring you closer to God. When time permits, I'll list more traditional church-approved stuff that I liked.
